Gmail Lets Users Chat with AIM Buddies

Finally Google is giving Gmail a much needed attention by way of feature upgrades. First we saw the group chat function and some spanking new emoticons getting into Gmail chat. Then Gmail labels got color coded for better mail management and organization.

And now, Gmail is letting us sign into our AIM account and chat with our AIM buddies right inside Gmail’s chat feature. So,when you log in to Gmail chat, you’ll have the option to log in to AIM chat as well. Your AIM buddies username would appear on the Gmail chat window with the yellow “running man” icon to signify that they are your AIM buddies and not your GTalk friends.Gmail chat features such as chat history and automatic buddy list sorting works fine as well with the integrated AIM/Gmail Chat feature.

Now that’s what I call a pretty cool feature indeed. And a product of open standards and interoperability indeed.

Yes, it’s time Google put some extra effort in continuing to develop Gmail towards a more web 2.0 in-tune application. Yahoo IM is not too far ahead or is it really? Gmail could very well catch up if not overtake Yahoo IM. (more on Techmeme)
