Yahoo! Inc. and Belo Corp. announced today a new agreement that will make 13 of Belo’s television stations exclusive providers of local news video in their respective markets. As a part of the agreement, Yahoo will now host dozens of local news video clips provided by Belo each day that will run in the local news pages of Yahoo News. The videos will also be made available to all Yahoo users when major news breaks in local markets.
Under the terms of the agreement, the two companies will share advertising revenue generated from the video clips. The agreement encompasses all Belo television markets with the exception of Dallas and Boise. Local markets to be included are: Charlotte, Hampton/Norfolk, Houston, Louisville, New Orleans, Phoenix, Portland, San Antonio, Seattle/Tacoma, Spokane, St. Louis, and Tuscon.
With the addition of Belo news video clips, Yahoo News now has local news television coverage in 18 of the top 25 markets in the U.S.
This latest agreement adds to a previously announced deal which began in 2005. This first collaboration was a job posting distribution agreement between Yahoo’s HotJobs and Belo’s newspapers. Over the years the two companies have discussed additional ways of working together, and today’s announcement is a result of that.
