Galaxy S Should Hit 10 Million in Sales by EOY

Do you remember when we told you that Windows Phone 7 was flailing, desperately trying to compete? Do you remember when we said that their 1.5 million total units shipped to resellers was nothing to smile at? Here’s one other statistic that should confirm where things stand in the mobile world: Samsung announced that the Galaxy S phone series had sold 9.3 million units as of December 22nd.

According to a report from Engadget, Samsung has done a bang-up job in competing against iPhone with its Galaxy S series, an Android-powered lineup of mobile phones available in slightly different looks and feels across the globe. Since the initial release of the series about six months ago, the sales have gone very well, and the ambitious goal of ten million sales by the end of the year was announced just a couple months ago. This major benchmark, if reached, would be a first for any Android-powered family of phones.

However, this doesn’t put the series in line with the iPhone 4 just yet, which sold 14 million units in the first quarter, but it does give Android-powered phones a much bigger share of the market. Additionally, the Galaxy S lineup is outranking iPhone 4 in sales in certain parts of the globe, including South Korea, Samsung’s “home town.”

It also gives us an idea of how the Nexus S may fare, a phone that is basically two operating systems ahead of the Galaxy S series (which was still running off Eclair, Android 2.1, when it shipped). Given that the hardware specs for the Nexus S are on par or superior, that the phone is unlocked, and that the Nexus S based its design more on the Galaxy than the original Nexus, we can expect good things to come for Google’s second attempt in the device market.
