Last August 5, athletes from different parts of the world convened in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil to take part in the 2016 Summer Olympics—which will run until August 21.
The multi-sport event is a host to a couple of firsts:
- Kosovo and South Sudan are taking part in the Olympics for the first time
- Rio 2016 is the first Summer Olympics under the IOC presidency of Thomas Bach; and
- Rio de Janeiro is the first South American city to host the event
