Google’s Gary Illyes stated at SMX East that the company will not announce when the mobile-first index is done rolling out.
In fact, it may never be fully rolled out, as Illyes says there will always be some anomalies.
This information comes from those in attendance at SMX East who were tweeting highlights from the conference.
We aren’t going to tell you when we finish rolling out the mobile first index. Will always be some outliers.

Plans were first announced by Google for a mobile-first search index last year.
Since then, SEOs and site owners have been waiting to hear official word on when this significant update will be implemented.
We previously reported that the mobile-first index has started rolling out to a select number of sites that are ready for it.
As for when the mobile-first index will be in place for all sites, minus the outliers, we can all stop wondering because it seems that we’ll never know.
For what it’s worth, representatives from Google previously stated the company planned to make the mobile-first switch in early 2018.
Perhaps that’s when the mobile-first index will be in place for most sites, but again we’ll never know for sure.
