Google is giving local news sources an opportunity to shine in its News section with a new tag developed to identify when a news story is coming from a local source.
While there is already a section for local stories in Google News, the company realizes that some local stories can go from being local, to regional, or even national. However, hyper-local sources are rarely surfaced in the national news section, which makes it difficult for the local sources to get the credit they deserve for breaking the story.
A new tag, reading “Local Source”, will now appear across all editions of Google News. Locally sourced articles are identified by looking about where the story has been written about in the past, and comparing it to the national news edition.
The newly tagged articles will be seen in the expanded story box on news.google.com and in the Google News & Weather iOS and Android apps.
