Google hasn’t been short on clever promotions to publicize its Nexus S phone, with the most notable event being the recent launch of the device into space. We can add something else to that list, too: Google now has a 42″ version of the phone at Best Buy.
Best Buy, the primary retailer teaming up with Google, is featuring a 42″, touch enabled version of the new Google smartphone, according to a report from Engadget. This model is for display purposes only, we’re sad to say, and is only on display at select Best Buy locations (with Tech Crunch reporting on the one at San Carlos, CA). While impressive for its size if nothing else, the behemoth cousin of the Nexus S doesn’t seem to have smooth handling, at least if the demo video from Tech Crunch tells us anything.
The massive device isn’t actually a full-sized phone, however. Rather, it’s a giant touch-screen paired with an actual Nexus S. In some ways, that makes this giant mobile phone much more impressive, since it showcases the ability of the Nexus S processor to handle large output much more readily. To get the giant device to appropriately showcase the Nexus S hardware, the 42″ version actually has mirrors rigged up to use the device’s own camera.
I myself was able to go into a local Best Buy to take a look at the Nexus S, although not the ridiculously sized one. When compared to my Evo, the Nexus S runs more smoothly, looks prettier, and very simply made me want to fork over a wad full of cash so I could get Gingerbread earlier. I’m not the only one with this urge, apparently. Google promotions seem to have been successful, with sales and promotions reporting highly successful numbers thus far.
